Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan

Book 1
 Novel Summation:

Percy Jackson is a good kid, but he can’t seem to focus on his schoolwork or control his temper. And lately, being away at boarding school is only getting worse Percy could have sworn his pre-algebra teacher turned into a monster and tried to kill him. Percys mom decides its time that he knew the truth about where he came from. She sends Percy to Camp Half-Blood, a summer camp for demigods (on Long Island) , where he learns that the father he never knew is Poseidon, God of the Sea. Soon a mystery unfolds and together with his friends one a satyr and the other the demigod daughter of Athena, Percy sets out on a quest across the United States to reach the gates of the Underworld (located in a recording studio in Hollywood) and prevent a catastrophic war between the gods. But to succeed on his quest, Percy will have to unravel a treachery more powerful than the gods themselves.
My Thoughts:
I loved this book. I am currently doing a major in Classical Studies so I really appreciated the authenticity of the book. The Greek mythological characters were given a modern spin without taking away from their history. There were several mythological references which made me very happy. I am currently taking Greek myth and have previously taken Greek Civilization and felt really engaged with the book. I believe that anyone who is unfamiliar with the Greek myths would also appreciate the novel, for it is an epic story with several appealing characteristics. The characters were refreshing, realistic, enjoyable, and you could relate to them.  Percy Jackson was a strong protagonist that carried the book far. Percy is your typical hero but he is so much more. He isn’t perfect, he makes mistakes, but he knows what is important, and he is strong in his own way. Every other character were equally intriguing, with their own stories to be told. There was never a moment in the book where I felt bored. The plot was highly entertaining, the settings were familiar, and the book itself was easy to read. The book had action, history, some romance, everything a book lover looks for in a book.I would strongly recommend this book to everyone.

Future Books:

The next book in the series is Percy Jackson and the Olympians: Sea of Monsters. The rest of the books in the series are as follows: Titans Curse, Battle of the Labyrinth, and the Last Olympian.

Movie Connections:

This book is a movie coming out in Canada and the USA on February 12, 2010. Starring Logan Lerman and Percy Jackson, Alexandra Daddario as Annabeth, Brandon T Jackson as Grover, Sean Bean as Zeus, and Pierce Brosnan as Chiron. The second book in the series is scheduled to be released in 2012. Saw the movie the day it came out and I have to say as a movie it was pretty awesome. It kept most of the details, it was action packed, full of adventure, and had entertaining characters. As a film adaption of a book it was really disappointing. They changed a lot of key things. I think the casting choices were really well except I’m not too sure I liked some of the Olympians. When you compared the Olympians to the pictures from the Percy Jackson Guide its really off. Also Annabeth was suppose to be a blonde, but otherwise she was pretty good.

My Character:

This is the character that I created for the Percy Jackson series
