Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins

Book 2 (Book 1: The Hunger Games)

Novel Summation:

Against all odds, Katniss Everdeen has won the annual Hunger Games with fellow district tribute Peeta Mellark. But it was a victory won by defiance of the Capitol and their harsh rules. Katniss and Peeta should be happy. After all, they have just won for themselves and their families a life of safety and plenty. But there are rumors of rebellion among the subjects, and Katniss and Peeta, to their horror, are the faces of that rebellion. The Capitol is angry. The Capitol wants revenge.

My Thoughts:I thought this book was brilliant. The first part consists of Katniss adjusting to her life now that the hunger games are over. She struggles with what is real to her. She doesn’t know whether the feelings for Peeta are real or not. Then the announcement of the quarter quell. 24 of the previous winners of the hunger games will be forced back into the arena. I predicted this would happen. The Capitol was angry with Katniss and what better way to make her suffer then to make her compete again. Since Katniss, Peeta, and Haymich are the only victors it is quickly realized that Katniss and Peeta will be going into the games again. Katniss devotes herself to protecting Peeta. The time in the games this time is very short lived and the strategy this time changes. Katniss and Peeta make several alliances such as with Finnick the good looking winner from district 4 and his mentor Mags, Johanna a cruel and sarcastic girl, and Beetee and Wiress an smart couple. Although alliances are proving to be helpful it means saying goodbye is harder especially when several people die. Outside the games a rebellion is stirring and all of it stemming from District 13. The face of that rebellion in Katniss. The book ends with several people escaping but Katniss and Peeta are separated with Katniss heading to District 13 and Peeta being taken by the Capitol. As for District 12 it is destroyed. Cinna is thought to have been killed early on in the book and I thought this was completely unnecessary and really sad. We never found out why he chose District 12 and we don’t learn anything about him. This book was slightly not as good as the first but it was still pretty amazing. I would recommend it to those that enjoyed the first.

Future Books:

The last book in the trilogy is Mockingjay.
