Book 2 (Book 1: Beautiful Creatures)

Novel Summation:

Ethan Wate used to think of Gatlin, the small Southern town he had always called home, as a place where nothing ever changed. Then he met mysterious newcomer Lena Duchannes, who revealed a secret world that had been hidden in plain sight all along. A Gatlin that harbored ancient secrets beneath its moss-covered oaks and cracked sidewalks. A Gatlin where a curse has marked Lena’s family of powerful Supernaturals for generations. A Gatlin where impossible, magical, life-altering events happen. Sometimes life-ending. Together they can face anything Gatlin throws at them, but after suffering a tragic loss, Lena starts to pull away, keeping secrets that test their relationship. And now that Ethan’s eyes have been opened to the darker side of Gatlin, there’s no going back. Haunted by strange visions only he can see, Ethan is pulled deeper into his town’s tangled history and finds himself caught up in the dangerous network of underground passageways endlessly crisscrossing the South, where nothing is as it seems

My Thoughts:

So it took me awhile to get into this book since I haven’t read the series in a while. To sum up the last book for all those who forget and what I could piece together from this book Lena is a caster. Casters are magical beings that are either light or dark. On Lena’s sixteenth birthday she was supposed to choose between light or dark except she didn’t and has delayed that choice. Ethan Wate is the main character and Lena is his love interest. Ethan and Lena’s ancestors were in love but that ended tragically. For mortals like Ethan can’t be with casters.  Lena kind of really annoyed me in the book. I understand that she lost someone really important to her and she needed to grieve but she completely shut Ethan out. After all they went through you would think she would turn to him the most. However, the ending explained her motivations which okay I understand why she did it but still she made a choice. I think the ending was a little unbelievable. Everything seemed to work out conveniently for the characters when it realistically shouldn’t have. Even though the way it ended showed that not everything is perfect. It kind of ended like ok we have to end the book soon so lets just settle these conflicts for the sake of ending the conflicts. We have some new characters in the book such as John Breed a mysterious magically being, Liv an interesting and perhaps potential love rival for someone, and Abraham the big bad guy everyone is afraid of. Lot of familiar faces appear as well. Such as Ridley, Lena’s siren cousin, Sarafine, Lena’s dark caster mother, Link, Ethan’s friend, and more. This book is really interesting and is a wonderfully weaved story. It can get a little slow at times or frustrating but its worth the read. I would definitely recommend the book.
